Residents and visitors to the Lake Erie Shores & Islands have been noticing a unique mode of transportation roaming the local roadways this summer. The head-turning vehicle is called a MOKE and Craig Durnwald, Co-Owner and General Manager of MOKE America Ohio, said the most common reaction he hears when someone encounters one for the first time is, “I’ve never seen one before!”

Durnwald said that people are constantly surprised to learn that the MOKE has been around since 1964. The MOKE was originally designed by the British Military as a Light Utility Vehicle to be dropped from aircraft in remote areas. It later became popular in Australia, and throughout the Caribbean, for use as a economical mode of daily transportation as well as for dedicated use in the hospitality business.

In 2016, the modern MOKE was born! MOKE America, utilizing the expertise of Cruise Car, Inc. of Sarasota, Florida began production of the fully electric MOKE Low Speed Vehicle (LSV). The new, modern MOKE is street legal for us on all U.S. public roadways with a posted speed of 35 mph or less.

The MOKE is also popular for use in private gated communities, marinas, and social venues. So, you may also hear the MOKE referred to as an NEV (neighborhood electric vehicle),” Durwald explained.

The modern MOKE has a range of 40 miles or more on a single change. It is easily re-charged from any household 110-volt receptacle utilizing the on-board charger/maintainer. The MOKE is equipped with AGM Sealed Batteries, so there is no maintenance (such as checking battery water levels) or off-gassing during charging.

With 13 diffrerent body colors, and two different colors of interior (white and black), as well as special edition models, we maintain one of the largest inventories of MOKEs in the country. We generally have 50 cars onsite and another 100 being built.
